The compact GESIM BioSyntheSizer manifests a new instrumentation concept for robots for complex laboratory automation on low-volume scale. It comprises a bunch of quite versatile modules for sample handling and sample processing. They are built to a specific application and can be accomplished by off-the-shelf lab components. 20 years of experience in the field of microfluidics and lab automation makes the BioSyntheSizer different from common pipetting robots. The instrument targets particular applications in combinatorial chemistry, chemical synthesis and biochemistry. Available liquid handling tools cover the complete range from a few Picolitres up to Millilitres.

The BioSyntheSizer relies on a gentle but accurate robotic stage with a cascadable tool head with up to seven independent Z-axes. It is powered by a state-of-the-art CPU with LIMS support based on Ethernet and EtherCAT interfaces.

In addition, racks that hold accessories such as disposable pipette tips or Luer-Lock needles are placed on the work deck. And for each synthesis type, a “kit plate” containing all necessary septum bottles for reagents, reactors, solid-phase extraction (SPE) purification cartridges, and tubes can be defined and stably mounted in the instrument.

The instrument is designed for but not limited to the synthesis of biopolymers, e.g. collagen, hydrogels, radiopharmaceutical tracers. Complex procedures will be executed in a much more reproducible manner than by the technician on the bench.
